The proposal to introduce a new system of casino regulation in Ireland will be considered in April 2016 at the general elections. The former Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, initially raised the question about the general scheme of controlling the activity of gambling establishments in 2013. Now, the government plans to revoke the operating licenses and let the local authorities issue certificates. The bill will affect all online and real business except for the National Lottery.
The government aims to establish approximately 40 casinos, abolish fixed rates and introduce additional recommendations. The law will officially come into force after the elections of 2016. "People need to remember that we already have our own controller that copes brilliantly, a perfect example of that is the National Lottery. We just need to establish some ground rules," says Liam Sloan, the observer for operators.
